The 2019 Aeropress Championship India kicked off with its third edition in the heart of hi-tech city Hyderabad on 19 August at Roastery Coffee House.
Over the last two years, we’ve seen how much more people are loving the Aeropress and preparing for the championship throughout the year. In Hyderabad, we had many professional baristas and home-brewers participate. Some of them flew in from other cities and we even had a participant from Oman! His love for coffee and desire to be with the community-made him sign up for the event.
The Hyderabad round started off with 21 participants. On the count of three, each would make their secret recipes ready for the judge’s table.
We were honoured to have four prestigious judges on the panel. Throughout the day, they sipped each cup carefully, in some cases sipping it, again and again, just to ensure they selected the right cup to move forward. After tasting each cup, they displayed the cup that won their palate and made a place in their heart.
After four super fun, yet challenging rounds (with one tie-breaker, two wild card entries and 44 cups)… we finally found the winning Aeropress cup of Hyderabad! Surpassing two other professional baristas, Mr Vemana made it to the top, while Nagendra won second place, and Prabhakash secured the third position.
Aeropress Championship India’s national coordinator Mr Suhas says, “It’s been so amazing to see home baristas being a part of this which shows that coffee culture in India is becoming huge. The very first round had 21 contestants which are almost double of last year in Hyderabad and also The Hindu paper covered the story on the very first day which is so awesome.
With partners like Indian Coffee Culture, Coffee by di Bella, Blue Tokai, Roastery Coffee House, The Quick Brown Fox, Naviluna Chocolates, Benki Brewing Tools, and Earth Roastery, this event has and will be such a huge success.”
We had a wonderful time meeting our coffee community in Hyderabad and can’t wait to see what Kolkata, “the city of joy,” has for us next week!
